Many people in industry and the Services, who have practical experience of noise, regard any investigation of this question as a waste of time; they are not prepared even to admit the possibility that noise affects people. On the other hand, those who dislike noise will sometimes use most inadequate evidence to support their pleas for a quieter society. This is a pity, because noise abatement really is a good cause, and it is likely to be discredited if it gets to be associated with bad science.
One allegation often made is that noise produces mental illness. A recent article in a weekly newspaper, for instance, was headed with a striking illustration of a lady in a state of considerable distress, with the caption "She was yet another victim, reduced to a screaming wreck". On turning eagerly to the text, one learns that the lady was a typist who found the sound of office typewriters worried her more and more until eventually she had to go into a mental hospital. Now the snag in this sort of anecdote is of course that one cannot distinguish cause and effect. Was the noise a cause of the illness, or were the complaints about noise merely a symptom? Another patient might equally well complain that her neighbours were combining to slander her and persecute her, and yet one might be cautious about believing this statement.
What is needed in the case of noise is a study of large numbers of people living under noisy conditions, to discover whether they are mentally ill more often than other people are. Some time ago the United States Navy, for instance, examined a very large number of men working on aircraft carriers: the study was known as Project Anehin. It can be unpleasant to live even several miles from an aerodrome; if you think what it must be like to share the deck of a ship with several squadrons of jet aircraft, you will realize that a modern navy is a good place to study noise. But neither psychiatric interviews nor objective tests were able to show any effects upon these American sailors. This result merely confirms earlier American and British studies: if there is any effect of noise upon mental health, it must be so small that present methods of psychiatric diagnosis cannot find it. That does not prove that it does not exist: but it does mean that noise is less dangerous than, say, being brought up in an orphanage—which really is a mental health hazard.

* **practical experience**：实际经验；of引出熟悉的领域，不等于拥有严格研究证据。

* **a waste of time**：浪费时间的事；waste可数表示一件浪费之事，time不可数。

* **admit the possibility**：承认可能性；承认可能不等于承认已经发生。

* **inadequate evidence**：不充分的证据；评价证据够不够，不是直接断言主张一定错误。

* **a good cause**：值得支持的事业；cause此处是事业目标，区别于因果的原因。

* **associated with**：与……联系起来；有关联不自动证明互为原因。

* **a striking illustration**：引人注目的插图；undefined

* **in a state of**：处于……状态；of后接状态名词，不表示某一行政州。

* **cause and effect**：原因与结果；区分方向，需要比“同时出现”更多的信息。

* **merely a symptom**：只是一个症状；undefined

* **be cautious about**：对……谨慎；about后可接doing，不是完全拒绝。

* **large numbers of**：大量的；数量多仍需看样本与比较是否合适。

* **mentally ill**：患有精神疾病的；undefined

* **share the deck**：共用甲板；with引出同用者，不必等于均分所有权。

* **objective tests**：客观测试；客观测量仍可能有检测能力限制。

* **confirms earlier**：印证较早的……；undefined

* **psychiatric diagnosis**：精神科诊断；undefined

* **prove that**：证明……；不要用prove替代只表示提示的suggest。

* **less dangerous than**：比……危险小；undefined

* **being brought up**：成长于；被养育；undefined

* **a mental health hazard**：健康危害；危险的类型与对象应具体，不能混成全面结论。

#### Many people in industry and the Services, who have practical experience of noise, regard any investigation of this question as a waste of time; they are not prepared even to admit the possibility that noise affects people.

#### On the other hand, those who dislike noise will sometimes use most inadequate evidence to support their pleas for a quieter society.

#### This is a pity, because noise abatement really is a good cause, and it is likely to be discredited if it gets to be associated with bad science.

#### One allegation often made is that noise produces mental illness.

#### A recent article in a weekly newspaper, for instance, was headed with a striking illustration of a lady in a state of considerable distress, with the caption "She was yet another victim, reduced to a screaming wreck".

#### On turning eagerly to the text, one learns that the lady was a typist who found the sound of office typewriters worried her more and more until eventually she had to go into a mental hospital.

复合句，主句主谓宾结构，前面的伴随状语可以还原成 on the occasion of turning eagerly to the text.

#### Now the snag in this sort of anecdote is of course that one cannot distinguish cause and effect.

复合句，主句主系表结构，that 引导的表语从句为主谓宾结构. cause and effect 就是 the principle of causation，因果关系.

#### Was the noise a cause of the illness, or were the complaints about noise merely a symptom?

#### Another patient might equally well complain that her neighbours were combining to slander her and persecute her, and yet one might be cautious about believing this statement.

#### What is needed in the case of noise is a study of large numbers of people living under noisy conditions, to discover whether they are mentally ill more often than other people are.

#### Some time ago the United States Navy, for instance, examined a very large number of men working on aircraft carriers: the study was known as Project Anehin.

#### It can be unpleasant to live even several miles from an aerodrome; if you think what it must be like to share the deck of a ship with several squadrons of jet aircraft, you will realize that a modern navy is a good place to study noise.

#### But neither psychiatric interviews nor objective tests were able to show any effects upon these American sailors.

#### This result merely confirms earlier American and British studies: if there is any effect of noise upon mental health, it must be so small that present methods of psychiatric diagnosis cannot find it.

#### That does not prove that it does not exist: but it does mean that noise is less dangerous than, say, being brought up in an orphanage—which really is a mental health hazard.
