No two sorts of birds practice quite the same sort of flight; the varieties are infinite; but two classes may be roughly seen. Any ship that crosses the Pacific is accompanied for many days by the smaller albatross, which may keep company with the vessel for an hour without visible or more than occasional movement of wing. The currents of air that the walls of the ship direct upwards, as well as in the line of its course, are enough to give the great bird with its immense wings sufficient sustenance and progress. The albatross is the king of the gliders, the class of fliers which harness the air to their purpose, but must yield to its opposition.
In the contrary school, the duck is supreme. It comes nearer to the engines with which man has "conquered" the air, as he boasts. Duck, and like them the pigeons, are endowed with steel-like muscles, that are a good part of the weight of the bird, and these will ply the short wings with such irresistible power that they can bore for long distances through an opposing gale before exhaustion follows. Their humbler followers, such as partridges, have a like power of strong propulsion, but soon tire. You may pick them up in utter exhaustion, if wind over the sea has driven them to a long journey.
The swallow shares the virtues of both schools in highest measure. It tires not, nor does it boast of its power; but belongs to the air, travelling it may be six thousand miles to and from its northern nesting home, feeding its flown young as it flies, and slipping through a medium that seems to help its passage even when the wind is adverse. Such birds do us good, though we no longer take omens from their flight on this side and that; and even the most superstitious villagers no longer take off their hats to the magpie and wish it good-morning.

* **roughly seen**：大致分辨出；undefined

* **keep company with**：与……相伴；本课说伴船飞行，不是经营公司。

* **more than occasional**：超过偶尔程度的；undefined

* **currents of air**：气流；current可指气流、水流或电流，需看修饰语。

* **sufficient sustenance**：足够的支持；undefined

* **harness the air**：利用空气的力量；harness强调利用力量，不是简单拥有。

* **yield to**：向……让步；这里指顺应不利气流，不是获得产量。

* **In the contrary school**：在相反的飞行类型中；undefined

* **are endowed with**：具有；天生拥有；较正式，常指禀赋，不必用于所有普通配置。

* **irresistible power**：难以抵挡的力量；undefined

* **through an opposing gale**：顶着强劲逆风；undefined

* **in utter exhaustion**：在精疲力竭的状态中；utter强化彻底，别译成有一点疲倦。

* **shares the virtues**：兼有优点；virtue在这里是优点，不一定是道德美德。

* **in highest measure**：达到最高程度；undefined

* **to and from**：往返于；包括去和回两个方向，不是一条单程。

* **take omens**：占卜吉凶；文中指历史习俗，不作为判断方法推荐。

* **take off their hats**：脱帽；可指实际动作，也可有致敬含义，按语境读。

#### No two sorts of birds practice quite the same sort of flight; the varieties are infinite; but two classes may be roughly seen.

其中 practice 作动词，美式英语通常拼作 practice，英式英语通常拼作 practise，这里可以理解为 to do sth. regularly as part of your normal behaviour，即鸟类通常具有怎样的飞行习惯，在这里翻译成拥有怎样的飞行方式即可.

#### Any ship that crosses the Pacific is accompanied for many days by the smaller albatross, which may keep company with the vessel for an hour without visible or more than occasional movement of wing.

#### The currents of air that the walls of the ship direct upwards, as well as in the line of its course, are enough to give the great bird with its immense wings sufficient sustenance and progress.

#### The albatross is the king of the gliders, the class of fliers which harness the air to their purpose, but must yield to its opposition.

#### In the contrary school, the duck is supreme.

#### It comes nearer to the engines with which man has "conquered" the air, as he boasts.

#### Duck, and like them the pigeons, are endowed with steel-like muscles, that are a good part of the weight of the bird, and these will ply the short wings with such irresistible power that they can bore for long distances through an opposing gale before exhaustion follows.

#### Their humbler followers, such as partridges, have a like power of strong propulsion, but soon tire.

#### You may pick them up in utter exhaustion, if wind over the sea has driven them to a long journey.

#### The swallow shares the virtues of both schools in highest measure.

#### It tires not, nor does it boast of its power; but belongs to the air, travelling it may be six thousand miles to and from its northern nesting home, feeding its flown young as it flies, and slipping through a medium that seems to help its passage even when the wind is adverse.

but it belongs to…, it may be travelling six…home, as it flies feeding…young, and slipping…

#### Such birds do us good, though we no longer take omens from their flight on this side and that; and even the most superstitious villagers no longer take off their hats to the magpie and wish it good-morning.

take omens from 是从某事判断吉凶，take off their hats 是脱帽；不能把这段读成对占卜方法的推荐。
