People are always talking about "the problem of youth". If there is one—which I take leave to doubt—then it is older people who create it, not the young themselves. Let us get down to fundamentals and agree that the young are after all human beings—people just like their elders. There is only one difference between an old man and a young one: the young man has a glorious future before him and the old one has a splendid future behind him: and maybe that is where the rub is.
When I was a teenager, I felt that I was just young and uncertain—that I was a new boy in a huge school, and I would have been very pleased to be regarded as something so interesting as a problem. For one thing, being a problem gives you a certain identity, and that is one of the things the young are busily engaged in seeking.
I find young people exciting. They have an air of freedom, and they have not a dreary commitment to mean ambitions or love of comfort. They are not anxious social climbers, and they have no devotion to material things. All this seems to me to link them with life, and the origins of things. It's as if they were, in some sense, cosmic beings in violent and lovely contrast with us suburban creatures.All that is in my mind when I meet a young person. He may be conceited, ill-mannered, presumptuous or fatuous, but I do not turn for protection to dreary cliches about respect for elders—as if mere age were a reason for respect. I accept that we are equals, and I will argue with him, as an equal, if I think he is wrong.

* **the problem of youth**：所谓青年问题；undefined

* **take leave to doubt**：恕我对此怀疑；较正式、带修辞意味；日常可用I have my doubts。

* **get down to**：开始认真处理；to是介词，后接doing，不是动词原形。

* **after all**：毕竟；提醒一个不应忽略的事实，不总是最后的意思。

* **a glorious future**：光明的前途；glorious语气较强，日常bright更常用。

* **where the rub is**：症结所在；undefined

* **be regarded as**：被看作；as引出评价或身份，不用regard A to be B。

* **a certain identity**：某种身份认同；undefined

* **engaged in seeking**：忙于寻求；in后接名词或动名词，说明投入的活动。

* **an air of freedom**：一种自由的气息；air可指外在气质或氛围，不是空气成分。

* **material things**：物质方面的东西；undefined

* **link them with**：把他们与……联系起来；说明联系，别因有联系就断言因果。

* **in some sense**：从某种意义上说；限制自己的判断，不是说从所有角度都成立。

* **in violent and lovely contrast**：形成强烈而美妙的对照；undefined

* **respect for elders**：对长辈的尊重；respect作名词接for；作动词直接接对象。

* **as an equal**：以平等者的身份；as说明身份，不是举例。

#### People are always talking about "the problem of youth".

#### If there is one—which I take leave to doubt—then it is older people who create it, not the young themselves.

#### Let us get down to fundamentals and agree that the young are after all human beings—people just like their elders.

#### There is only one difference between an old man and a young one: the young man has a glorious future before him and the old one has a splendid future behind him: and maybe that is where the rub is.

#### When I was a teenager, I felt that I was just young and uncertain—that I was a new boy in a huge school, and I would have been very pleased to be regarded as something so interesting as a problem.

When I was a teenager 其后 I felt 后接两个 that 引导的宾语从句，第二个从句借破折号解释前一个从句：that I was just young and uncertain—that I was a new boy in a huge school。 and 后接 I would have been very pleased…，表达对过去未实现情形的设想。

#### For one thing, being a problem gives you a certain identity, and that is one of the things the young are busily engaged in seeking.

#### I find young people exciting.

#### They have an air of freedom, and they have not a dreary commitment to mean ambitions or love of comfort.

#### They are not anxious social climbers, and they have no devotion to material things.

#### All this seems to me to link them with life, and the origins of things.

#### It's as if they were, in some sense, cosmic beings in violent and lovely contrast with us suburban creatures.

#### All that is in my mind when I meet a young person.

#### He may be conceited, ill-mannered, presumptuous or fatuous, but I do not turn for protection to dreary cliches about respect for elders—as if mere age were a reason for respect.

#### I accept that we are equals, and I will argue with him, as an equal, if I think he is wrong.
