Few countries will admit officially that they employ spies. However, from time to time, a spy is caught and the public sometimes gets a glimpse of what is going on behind the political scenes. Spies are rarely shot these days. They are frequently tried and imprisoned. If a spy is important enough, he is sometimes handed back to an enemy country in exchange for an equally important spy whom the enemy have caught. Few people have the opportunity to witness such as exchanges, for they are carried out in secret.
On cold winter morning on December 17th last year, a small blue car stopped on a bridge in a provincial town in northern Germany. Three men dressed in heavy black coats get out and stood on the bridge. While they waited there, they kept on looking over the side. Fifteen men got out of the boat and looked up at the bridge. The men on the bridge silently walked down the stone steps leading to the river-bank. No words were spoken when they met the men from the boat. After a while, the motor-boat moved off and three men returned to the bridge. Now, only two of them were wearing black coats. The third was dressed in a light grey jacket. Anyone who had been watching the scene might not have realized that two master spies had been exchanged on that cold winter morning.

* **admit officially**：正式承认；admit that + 内容；officially 限定正式立场，不等于私下不知道。

* **from time to time**：偶尔；不时；频率低于一直，不能说成持续发生。

* **gets a glimpse of**：短暂瞥见；只能看到一角或片刻，不表示全面了解。

* **these days**：近来；如今；表示当前一段时期，不是特定的这几天日期。

* **in exchange for**：交换；换取；区分交出和换回的对象。

* **have the opportunity to**：曾有机会……；have the opportunity to do；若未发生，要保留否定或限制。

* **in secret**：秘密地；强调不让外人知晓，不是内心默想。

* **dressed in**：穿着；in接穿着，as接扮演的角色。

* **kept on**：不断；继续；on后接动名词，强调反复或持续。

* **No words were spoken**：谁也没说话；no words 作被动主语，突出沉默；不要漏掉 no。

* **moved off**：开走；驶离；常用于车船离开停靠处，与 move in（搬入）不同。

* **a light grey jacket**：一件浅灰色夹克；light 在颜色前表示浅色，不是夹克重量轻；服装变化是课文线索。

* **had been exchanged**：此前已被交换；过去完成被动将交换放在旁观者事后理解之前。

Few countries will admit officially that they employ spies.

注释：①employ = provide work for。②from time to time = now and again。③gets a glimpse of = is able to see briefly。④rarely = seldom。⑤frequently = often。⑥handed = given。⑦witness = see。\[1]behind the scene = secretly rather than publicly，这里加了个 political 在里面。

On cold winter morning on December 17th last year, a small blue car stopped on a bridge in a provincial town in northern Germany.
