Has it ever happened to you? Have you ever put your trousers in the washing machine and then remembered there was a large bank note in your back pocket? When you rescued your trousers, did you find the note was whiter than white? People who live in Britain needn't despair when they make mistakes like this and a lot of people do! Fortunately for them, the Bank of England has a team called Mutilated Ladies which deals with claims from people who fed their money to a machine or to their dog. Dogs, it seems, love to chew up money!
A recent case concerns Jane Butlin whose fiancé, John, runs a successful furniture business. John had a very good day and put his wallet containing £3,000 into the microwave oven for safekeeping. Then he and Jane went horse-riding. When they got home, Jane cooked their dinner in the microwave oven and without realizing it, cooked her fiancé's wallet as well. Imagine their dismay when they found a beautifully-cooked wallet and notes turned to ash! John went to see his bank manager who sent the remains of wallet and the money to the special department of the Bank of England in Newcastle: the Mutilated Ladies! They examined the remains and John got all his money back. "So long as there's something to identify, we will give people their money back,"said a spokeswoman for the Bank. "Last year, we paid £1.5m on 21,000 claims."

* **Has it ever happened to you**：你有没有遇到过这种事；用现在完成时引出经历，再用过去时讲具体一次。

* **make mistakes**：犯错；make a mistake / make mistakes；不是 do mistakes。

* **deals with**：处理；应对；说明负责处理的事情，不要逐词译成交易。

* **chew up**：嚼碎；up 强调嚼坏、嚼碎的结果。

* **runs a successful furniture business**：经营一家生意兴隆的家具公司；run 表示经营；可替换行业但保留 run a business 的组合。

* **for safekeeping**：为妥善保管；交代存放目的，不代表存放处一定安全。

* **went horse-riding**：去骑马；go + 活动-ing：go swimming / go shopping。

* **without realizing it**：没有意识到；不知不觉地；without + doing；it 指上文的行为或事实，主语应与主句一致。

* **turned to ash**：化为灰烬；描述烧毁的结果，不是把灰倒转。

* **got all his money back**：拿回了全部钱款；替换物主代词来说明谁获得退款或赔偿。

* **So long as**：只要；给出条件，不是强调时间很长。

* **give people their money back**：把钱退还给人们；give + 人 + 钱 + back；不用 give back people money 的机械顺序。

Has it ever happened to you?

②happened = occurred。③remembered = recalled。 ⑤Fortunately = Luckily。

A recent case concerns Jane Butlin whose fiancé, John, runs a successful furniture business.

注释：①concerns = is about。 ③ dismay = sadness。④the remains = what was left。⑤department = section。⑥examine 是动词，而exam=examination，是名词，考试。⑦1.5m = 1.5million。

#### Summary 摘要

John Butlin runs a successful furniture business and after a very good day, he put his wallet containing £3,000 into the microwave oven for safekeeping. Then he and his fiancee, Jane, went horse-riding, after which Jane cooked their dinner in the microwave oven only to(却，不料) find to their dismay that the money had been destroyed. #### Composition 作文

Jane opened the oven door and saw that her meal was ready to serve(准备就绪). She took the food out of the oven and in doing so, noticed something strange inside the oven which she couldn't recognize. So she went to find John and told him about it. In dismay(好悲催哦), John quickly explained that he had put his wallet containing the day's takings into the oven for safekeeping. They both rushed to the oven and saw that the money had been destroyed. At first, they didn't know what to do. John wanted to throw the money away, but Jane wouldn't let him. It's best not to disturb(句型，最好不要干某事) the wallet, Jane said. You can see all the money is there, even if it has been destroyed. Jane told John to go and see his bank manager for advice(寻求建议), so the next day John took the wallet and the ashes to the bank. (150 words)
