Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar.
The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw "a large cat" only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered. The search proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was found clinging to bushes. Several people complained of "cat-like noises" at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from? As no pumas had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.

* **taken seriously**：被认真对待；take something seriously；被动时用 be taken seriously，不是表情严肃。

* **felt obliged to**：觉得有必要；感到有责任；强调责任或情势促使行动，不只是想做。

* **ran away**：逃跑；表示逃走，from 后说明离开或躲避的对象。

* **proved difficult**：结果发现很困难；prove + 形容词说明实际结果，不加 to do；可换为 proved useful。

* **a trail of**：一连串；留下的一串痕迹；leave a trail of + 痕迹；可用于脚印、线索，不只说小路。

* **a number of**：许多；若干；表示若干个；加 great 或 large 强调数量多，后接复数谓语。

* **complained of**：抱怨；反映令人不满的情况；本课指反映夜间的叫声，并非身体症状；complain of 不能限定为只能诉说疾病。

* **fully convinced**：完全确信；be convinced that + 判断；它说明信念强，不自动等于判断正确。

* **in the possession of**：由……持有；描述物的归属；某人拥有某物用 in possession of。

* **managed to**：设法成功做到；不仅尝试，而且最终做到了；try to 不保证成功。

* **went on**：继续；持续；go on for + 时长；不要与 go on to do（接着做另一件事）混淆。

* **at large**：未被捕获；在逃；常用于逃犯或逃脱的危险动物，不等于面积很大。

Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America.

②spot v. 斑点on the spot 立刻、马上 = at once, immediately；在现场 = at the place of the action。③accumulate v. ④obliged to = bound to（在表示责任或义务的语境中意思接近）。 ⑤claimed = stated。⑥extraordinarily similar = surprisingly alike\[感谢微博匿名读者指出20200325]。

主句中they 作主语，双横线；were not taken 作谓语，波浪线；seriously 作方式状语，中括号。

主句experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate，其中experts 是主语，双横线； from the Zoo 作定语修饰experts，括号表示；后面的felt obliged to investigate 作谓语，波浪线；接着是一个for 引导的原因状语从句，该从句第二个中括号“.]”

who claimed to have seen the puma 是定语从句，修饰people，属于原因状语从句中的一个从句，我们继续细分，who 作主语，双横线；claimed 作谓语，波浪线；to have seen the puma 动词不定式短语作宾语，横线；该定语从句的第二个括号“)”因为在句子之中，故没有标点符号可以包括进来，此时主要看内部句子是否继续划分来标记是否为从句，一般属于从句，就会继续划分成分。

The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw "a large cat" only five yards away from her.

注释：①immediately = at once。②like = such as。③cling，过去式clung,≈stick。 ④covinced = sure，convince sb. of sth.。⑤in the possession of someone / in someone’s possession 表示“归某人所有”；someone is in possession of something 表示“某人拥有某物”。

#### Summary 摘要

The reports received by London Zoo that a puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London were similar in nature(本质上，事实上). A woman picking blackberries saw it first, but the puma moved from place to place, leaving a trail of dead deer and small animals. Paw prints and puma fur were found as well. "Cat-like noises" were heard at night and the animal was seen up a tree. Now experts were convinced that the animal really was a puma. (79 words)

#### Composition 作文

Mrs. Stone had spent the whole morning picking blackberries in the countryside near her home. It was nearly lunch time, so she decided to return for lunch. She was just picking up her basket when she heard a noise in the bushes. Then she saw an animal which looked like a cat. She knew it was not a cat because it was so large. The animal suddenly turned round to look at her and she thought it was going to come towards her and perhaps attack her. She dropped her basket and screamed loudly. Hearing the sound, the animal disappeared into the bushes, after which Mrs. Stone picked up her basket and ran all the way home(跑回家). She told her neighbors that she had seen a puma in the countryside, but they did not believe her. She also telephoned the police but they didn't believe her either. (148 words)
