# 95 · 纯属虚构

### 第1段

When the Ambassador of Escalopia returned home for lunch, his wife got a shock. He looked pale and his clothes were in a frightful state. 'What has happened?' she asked. 'How did your clothes get into such a mess?' 'A fire extinguisher, my dear,' answered the Ambassador drily. 'University students set the Embassy on fire this morning.' 'Good heavens!' exclaimed his wife. 'And where were you at the time?' 'I was in my office as usual,' answered the Ambassador. 'The fire broke out in the basement. I went down immediately, of course, and that fool, Horst, aimed a fire extinguisher at me. He thought I was on fire. I must definitely get that fellow posted.' The Ambassador's wife went on asking questions, when she suddenly noticed a big hole in her husband's hat. 'And how can you explain that?' she asked. 'Oh, that,' said the Ambassador. 'Someone fired a shot through my office window. Accurate, don't you think? Fortunately, I wasn't wearing it at the time. If I had been, I would not have been able to get home for lunch.'

* **got a shock**：大吃一惊；shock指一次突如其来的震惊，常保留a。

* **set the Embassy on fire**：纵火烧大使馆；on fire描述着火状态，完整结构可替换宾语。

* **as usual**：像往常一样；说明与往常相同，可放句首或句末交代背景。

* **broke out**：突然爆发；一般以事件作主语，不把被烧物直接作宾语。

* **aimed a fire extinguisher at**：把灭火器对准……；at说明瞄准对象；灭火器指向人是课文中的误会。

* **fired a shot**：开了一枪；fire在这里作开枪用；shot是一次射击。

复合句，主句主谓宾结构，when 引导的时间状语从句为主谓结构.

#### He looked pale and his clothes were in a frightful state.

并列句，and 连接前后两句，均为主系表结构.

#### 'How did your clothes get into such a mess?'

特殊疑问句，助动词 did 提到主语 your clothes 前面，you 是 your 的误写；get into such a mess 表示“弄得这样一团糟”，mess 不是 get 的直接宾语。

#### 'University students set the Embassy on fire this morning.'

简单句，主谓宾 + 宾补结构.

#### 'Good heavens!' exclaimed his wife.

简单句，主谓宾结构.

#### 'And where were you at the time?'

特殊疑问句，were 提前了，主谓结构.

#### I went down immediately, of course, and that fool, Horst, aimed a fire extinguisher at me.

并列句，and 连接前后两句，前句主谓结构，后句主谓宾结构.

#### He thought I was on fire.

复合句，主句主谓 + 宾语从句结构，这里的从句省略了that，从句为主系表结构.

#### I must definitely get that fellow posted.'

简单句，主谓宾 + 宾补结构.

#### The Ambassador's wife went on asking questions, when she suddenly noticed a big hole in her husband's hat.

复合句，主句主谓宾结构，后面是when 引导的时间状语从句，也是主谓宾结构.

#### 'And how can you explain that?'

特殊疑问句，can 提前到主语前，主谓宾结构.

#### Accurate, don't you think?

复合句，还原成完整的句子如主干结构所述，是一个宾语从句，该从句为主系表结构，所以句子中把表语提前，以作强调.

#### If I had been, I would not have been able to get home for lunch.'

复合句，主句 I would not have been able to get home for lunch 中 get home 为不及物用法，整体不能按主谓宾理解；句首是 if 引导的条件状语从句，该从句使用了虚拟语气，if I had been wearing the hat，表示与过去的事实相反的假设，为主谓结构，虚拟语 气是难点，具体语法可以复习第40课，之后再仔细研究亦可. 在英语的学习过程中，不可能遇到一个知识点就能完全搞懂，可以先多读多背，培养语感，日后再回过头来学习，就没那么困难了.
