# 94 · 未来的冠军

Experiments have proved that children can be instructed in swimming at a very early age. At a special swimming pool in Los Angeles, children become expert at holding their breath under water even before they can walk. Babies of two months old do not appear to be reluctant to enter the water. It is not long before they are so accustomed to swimming that they can pick up weights from the floor of the pool. A game that is very popular with these young swimmers is the underwater tricycle race. Tricycles are lined up on the floor of the pool seven feet under water. The children compete against each other to reach the other end of the pool. Many pedal their tricycles, but most of them prefer to push or drag them. Some children can cover the whole length of the pool without coming up for breath even once. Whether they will ever become future Olympic champions, only time will tell. Meanwhile, they should encourage those among us who cannot swim five yards before they are gasping for air.

* **at a very early age**：在很小的年纪；年龄阶段用at；age前有不定冠词。

* **holding their breath**：屏住呼吸；breath通常单数，即使主语多人也可这样用。

* **reluctant to**：不愿意做；表达犹豫或不情愿，不一定是完全拒绝。

* **accustomed to**：习惯于；表示已经习惯；这里 to 是介词，后面做某事用 -ing。

* **compete against**：与……竞争；against后是竞争对手，for后是奖项或目标。

* **coming up for breath**：浮上来换气；up是浮出水面，for说明目的。

复合句，主句主谓 + 宾语从句结构，从句为主谓结构，被动语态，可以被教导.

#### At a special swimming pool in Los Angeles, children become expert at holding their breath under water even before they can walk.

复合句，主句主系表结构，后面是时间状语从句，主谓结构.

#### Babies of two months old do not appear to be reluctant to enter the water.

简单句，主系表结构.

#### It is not long before they are so accustomed to swimming that they can pick up weights from the floor of the pool.

复合句，主句是主系表结构，后面是before 引导的时间状语从句，该从句直到句末，该句中有一个so…that 引导的结果状语从句，before 从句内 they are so accustomed to swimming 是主系表结构，that 从句 they can pick up weights 是主谓宾结构，两者不同。

#### A game that is very popular with these young swimmers is the underwater tricycle race.

复合句，主句主系表结构，中间有一个that 引导的定语从句修饰主语，该从句为主系表结构.

#### Tricycles are lined up on the floor of the pool seven feet under water.

简单句，主谓结构.

#### The children compete against each other to reach the other end of the pool.

简单句，主谓结构.

#### Many pedal their tricycles, but most of them prefer to push or drag them.

并列句，but 连接前后两句，前句为主谓宾结构，后句也是主谓宾结构，宾语为不定式短语，由or 连接，第二个动词不定式省略了to.

#### Some children can cover the whole length of the pool without coming up for breath even once.

简单句，主谓宾结构.

#### Whether they will ever become future Olympic champions, only time will tell.

复合句，主干部分还原了正常语序，课文中把宾语从句提前了，所以主句为主谓 + 宾语从句结构，从句为主系表结构.

#### Meanwhile, they should encourage those among us who cannot swim five yards before they are gasping for air.

复合句，主句主谓宾结构，后面是who 引导的定语从句，为主谓结构，该定语从句中还有一个before 引导的时间状语从句，为主谓结构.
