# 85 · 活到老学到老

I have just received a letter from my old school, informing me that my former headmaster, Mr. Stuart Page, will be retiring next week. Pupils of the school, old and new, will be sending him a present to mark the occasion. All those who have contributed towards the gift will sign their names in a large album which will be sent to the headmaster's home. We shall all remember Mr. Page for his patience and understanding and for the kindly encouragement he gave us when we went so unwillingly to school. A great many former pupils will be attending a farewell dinner in his honour next Thursday. It is a curious coincidence that the day before his retirement, Mr. Page will have been teaching for a total of forty years. After he has retired, he will devote himself to gardening. For him, this will be an entirely new hobby. But this does not matter, for, as he has often remarked, one is never too old to learn.

* **mark the occasion**：纪念这一时刻；mark在这里是庆祝或纪念，不是做题打分。

* **contributed towards**：为……出资；为……作贡献；本课指出钱买礼物；toward也是可用拼法。

* **sign their names**：签上他们的名字；多个人各签自己的名字时可用names复数。

* **in his honour**：为向他致敬；表示为了向某人致敬或纪念某人，代词随对象变化。

* **a total of**：总计；后接总数；不同于in total作状语。

* **devote himself to**：致力于；专心做；to是介词，后用gardening等动名词，不用动词原形。

#### I have just received a letter from my old school, informing me that my former headmaster, Mr. Stuart Page, will be retiring next week.

复合句，主句主谓宾结构，后面informing 所接的句子可以看作是现在分词作非限制性定语，informing = which informed，该分词短语的逻辑主语是a letter. inform 后面所接为双宾语结构，所以that 引导了一个宾语从句，该从句为主谓结构.

时态上需要留意将来进行时，will be retiring.

本句的Page 我们为避免和动画片形象小猪佩奇使用同样的名字，特将奇改为琦.

#### Pupils of the school, old and new, will be sending him a present to mark the occasion.

简单句，主谓 + 双宾语结构，同样使用了将来进行时，will be sending.

#### All those who have contributed towards the gift will sign their names in a large album which will be sent to the headmaster's home.

复合句，主句为主谓宾结构，主句的主语those 由一个who 引导的定语从句修饰，该定语从句为主谓结构. 后面有一个which 引导的定语从句修饰album 签名簿；从句 which will be sent 为被动结构，没有主动句的直接宾语，被送去.

#### We shall all remember Mr. Page for his patience and understanding and for the kindly encouragement he gave us when we went so unwillingly to school.

本句的主句为简单句，主谓宾结构，但后面for 引导的两个原因状语中，第二个原因状语里面包含了完整的句子，包括定语从句he gave us，以及when 引导的时间状语从句，主谓结构.

\[语法符号讲解] 本句第二个for 引导的是一个原因状语，并非从句，故其第二个中括号“].”是在点句号里面的，而when 引导的时间状语从句则需要把中括号标记在点句号外面，“.]”，再加上to school 地点状语的中括号，故而最后是“]].]”的标法.

#### A great many former pupils will be attending a farewell dinner in his honour next Thursday.

简单句，主谓宾结构，同样使用了将来进行时，will be attending.

#### It is a curious coincidence that the day before his retirement, Mr. Page will have been teaching for a total of forty years.

复合句，主句主系表结构，it 作形式主语，that 引导的主语从句作真正的主语，该从句为主谓结构，这里是将来完成进行时.

#### After he has retired, he will devote himself to gardening.

复合句，主句 he will devote himself to gardening 是主谓宾结构，himself 是 devote 的反身宾语，to gardening 说明投入精力的方向；句首 after 从句为主谓结构。

#### But this does not matter, for, as he has often remarked, one is never too old to learn.

并列句，for 为并列连词，前句为主谓结构；后句为主系表结构，而在后句中，又有一个as 引导的定语从句，修饰整个句子，为主谓宾结构.
