# 78 · 最后一根烟吗？

After reading an article entitled 'Cigarette Smoking and Your Health' I lit a cigarette to calm my nerves. I smoked with concentration and pleasure as I was sure that this would be my last cigarette. For a whole week I did not smoke at all and during this time, my wife suffered terribly. I had all the usual symptoms of someone giving up smoking: a bad temper and an enormous appetite. My friends kept on offering me cigarettes and cigars. They made no effort to hide their amusement whenever I produced a packet of sweets from my pocket. After seven days of this I went to a party. Everybody around me was smoking and I felt extremely uncomfortable. When my old friend Brian urged me to accept a cigarette, it was more than I could bear. I took one guiltily, lit it and smoked with satisfaction. My wife was delighted that things had returned to normal once more. Anyway, as Brian pointed out, it is the easiest thing in the world to give up smoking. He himself has done it lots of times!

* **calm my nerves**：缓解我的紧张；nerves复数指紧张情绪，不是一般的神经知识。

* **giving up smoking**：戒烟；up后用动名词，整个词块表达停止某项习惯。

* **kept on**：不断；继续；on后接动名词，强调反复或持续。

* **made no effort to**：完全没有试着做；no修饰effort，不能在复述时省掉否定。

* **urged me to**：力劝我做……；比ask更强烈，to后接动词原形。

* **returned to normal**：恢复正常；normal作名词性成分，通常不加the。

#### After reading an article entitled 'Cigarette Smoking and Your Health' I lit a cigarette to calm my nerves.

简单句，主谓宾结构，句首是一个after 所带的时间状语，这个状语比较长，里面提到了一篇文章，有一个后置定语予以修饰. calm my nerves 就是压压惊的意思，教材 直译也没问题，新概念课文的这个梗，现在还经常在网上看到烟民在吸烟有害的报道下留言，“吓得我赶紧点根烟压压惊”.

#### I smoked with concentration and pleasure as I was sure that this would be my last cigarette.

复合句，主句为主谓结构，后面有一个as 引导的原因状语从句，该从句中又包含一个宾语从句，as 从句 I was sure… 是主系表结构；其中 that this would be my last cigarette 也是主系表结构，补充 sure 的具体内容。

#### For a whole week I did not smoke at all and during this time, my wife suffered terribly.

并列句，均为主谓结构.

#### I had all the usual symptoms of someone giving up smoking: a bad temper and an enormous appetite.

简单句，主谓宾结构，of 后接名词短语 someone giving up smoking，其中 giving up smoking 是修饰 someone 的现在分词短语，表示“正在戒烟的人”。它在名词短语内部作后置修饰，不是游离在主句之外、表示伴随或原因的独立主格结构。 此处可以改为定语从句someone (who gives up smoking.)

#### My friends kept on offering me cigarettes and cigars.

简单句，主谓宾结构，offer 后面接双宾语，把B 提供给了A.

#### They made no effort to hide their amusement whenever I produced a packet of sweets from my pocket.

复合句，主句 They made no effort 是主谓宾结构，no effort 是 made 的宾语；后面有一个 whenever 引导的时间状语从句，主谓宾结构.

本句的动词produce 一般的意思是生产，但这里是拿出来，这种基础单词一定要好好查一次词典，把每一个义项都弄清楚. produce sth (from/out of sth): to show sth or make sth appear from somewhere 出示；展现；使出现.

#### After seven days of this I went to a party.

简单句，主谓结构.

#### Everybody around me was smoking and I felt extremely uncomfortable.

并列句，and 前句为主谓结构，后句为主系表结构.

#### When my old friend Brian urged me to accept a cigarette, it was more than I could bear.

复合句，主句为主系表结构，前面有一个when 引导的时间状语从句，为主谓宾 + 宾补结构，后面是一个比较状语从句，为主谓结构.

#### I took one guiltily, lit it and smoked with satisfaction.

并列句，三个句子并列，在时间关系上递进发展，从接了根烟，到点烟，再到吸烟，一个句子全表达到了.

#### My wife was delighted that things had returned to normal once more.

复合句，主句为主系表结构，后面是that 引导的宾语从句，为主谓结构.

#### Anyway, as Brian pointed out, it is the easiest thing in the world to give up smoking.

复合句，主句为it 作形式主语，后面to give up 动词不定式作真正的主语. 本句前面是as 引导的定语从句，as 是关系代词作宾语.

#### He himself has done it lots of times!

简单句，主谓宾结构，用了现在完成时.
