# 71 · 一个著名的大钟

When you visit London, one of the first things you will see is Big Ben, the famous clock which can be heard all over the world on the B.B.C.. If the Houses of Parliament had not been burned down in 1834, the great clock would never have been erected. Big Ben takes its name from Sir Benjamin Hall who was responsible for the making of the clock when the new Houses of Parliament were being built. It is not only of immense size, but is extremely accurate as well. Officials from Greenwich Observatory have the clock checked twice a day. On the B.B.C. you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected to the clock tower. Big Ben has rarely gone wrong. Once, however, it failed to give the correct time. A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down!

* **all over the world**：世界各地；over表达遍及，比只说in the world更突出覆盖范围。

* **takes its name from**：名字源自；its指事物；from说明命名来源，不是取走别人的名字。

* **responsible for**：负责……；for说明职责，也可引出造成结果的原因。

* **connected to**：与……相连；to说明连接的另一端；可用于电线或交通等。

* **gone wrong**：出毛病；与机器或事情搭配，强调偏离正常状态。

* **failed to**：未能做到；客观说未能做到，不一定意味着能力不足。

复合句，主句是主系表结构，中间有一个定语从句修饰things；句首是when 引导的时间状语从句，主谓宾结构；最后是which 引导的定语从句，主谓结构.

\[关键句型] 本课为复习课，本句第一个定语从句you will see. 复习第60课，表示将要发生的事情.

\[语法符号讲解] 本句BBC 采用了每一个字母均加“.”的写法，写成了B.B.C.，该词又正好在句末，这样句号和简写的点重合，为了表示on the BBC 仅仅是状语而非 从句，我们在该状语的右括号“]”的前面额外补回了点号，把句号放在了外面.

复合句，主句主谓结构，if 引导的条件状语从句也是主谓结构.

\[关键句型] 复习第64课，虚拟语气的表达，本句为与过去情况相反的假设.

#### Big Ben takes its name from Sir Benjamin Hall who was responsible for the making of the clock when the new Houses of Parliament were being built.

复合句，主句主谓宾结构，后面是who 引导的定语从句，该从句为主系表结构，在定语从句中还含有一个when 引导的时间状语从句，该从句为主谓结构.

#### It is not only of immense size, but is extremely accurate as well.

并列句，but 连接前后两句，均为主系表结构.

简单句，主谓宾 + 宾补结构.

\[关键句型] 复习第66课，have 的用法.

#### you can hear the clock when it is actually striking because microphones are connected to the clock tower.

复合句，主句主谓宾结构，后面是when 引导的时间状语从句，该从句为主谓结构，最后面是because 引导的原因状语从句，microphones are connected 是被动结构，to the clock tower 是介词短语，不是直接宾语。

#### Big Ben has rarely gone wrong.

简单句，主系表结构.

#### Once, however, it failed to give the correct time.

简单句，主谓宾结构，动词不定式短语作宾语.

#### A painter who had been working on the tower hung a pot of paint on one of the hands and slowed it down!

复合句，主句主谓宾结构，有两个并列的谓语hung 和slow down；中间有who 引导的定语从句修饰主语，主谓结构.

\[关键句型] 本句的定语从句复习第62课过去完成进行时，had been doing 形式.
