# 47 · 嗜酒的鬼魂

### 第1段

A public house which was recently bought by Mr. Ian Thompson is up for sale. Mr. Thompson is going to sell it because it is haunted. He told me that he could not go to sleep one night because he heard a strange noise coming from the bar. The next morning, he found that the doors had been blocked by chairs and the furniture had been moved. Though Mr. Thompson had turned the lights off before he went to bed, they were on in the morning. He also said that he had found five empty whisky bottles which the ghost must have drunk the night before. When I suggested that some villagers must have come in for a free drink, Mr. Thompson shook his head. The villagers have told him that they will not accept the pub even if he gives it away.

* **up for sale**：待售；固定说法表示正在出售，不是价格上涨。

* **go to sleep**：入睡；强调开始睡着，不同于go to bed上床。

* **turned the lights off**：关了灯；代词作宾语时必须放中间：turn them off。

* **shook his head**：摇头；shake过去式shook；常表示拒绝或不同意。

* **even if**：即使；哪怕；即使某个情况发生也如此；不要据此断言这个情况已经发生。

* **gives it away**：把它免费送人；代词it放中间；本课不是泄露秘密的意思。

#### A public house which was recently bought by Mr. Ian Thompson is up for sale.

复合句，主句主系表结构，其中表语up for sale 是固定搭配，就是挂牌放售的意思，可以与put 连用，put the public house up for sale. 其中有一个which 引导的定语从句修饰该house，为主谓结构.

Ian 发音为/ˈiːən/，对于不常见的人名的读音，即便是英语母语人士也不能确保读对，往往是会试探性地读出来，然后跟对方确认，就像我们遇到别人姓名中有生僻字，直接让对方告诉我们怎么读即可.

#### Mr. Thompson is going to sell it because it is haunted.

复合句，主句主谓宾结构，be going to do 动词词组作谓语，后面是because 引导的原因状语从句，为主谓结构.

#### The next morning, he found that the doors had been blocked by chairs and the furniture had been moved.

复合句，主句主谓 + 宾语从句结构，该宾语从句为and 连接的并列句，均为主谓结构.

#### Though Mr. Thompson had turned the lights off before he went to bed, they were on in the morning.

复合句，我们从though 引导的让步状语从句看起，该从句为主谓宾结构，the lights 是宾语，其中谓语是由动词短语 turn off 构成的，不过宾语放在了该动词短语之间，所以我们在副词 off 处标记为谓语. 该让步状语从句中又含有一个before 引导的时间状语从句，为主谓结构.

主句是they were on，主系表结构，主语they 指lights，这里 on 作表语，表示灯处于“开着”的状态，与前文 turn off 形成对照，但不是把 turned on 简写成 on，\[When something {such as a machine or an electric light} is on,] it is functioning or in use.

复合句，主句主谓 + 宾语从句结构，宾语从句为主谓宾结构，后面有一个which 引导的定语从句，为主谓结构.

#### When I suggested that some villagers must have come in for a free drink, Mr. Thompson shook his head.

#### The villagers have told him that they will not accept the pub even if he gives it away.

复合句，主句主谓宾 + that 引导的宾语从句结构，宾语从句为主谓宾结构，该从句中又包含一个even if 引导的让步状语从句，为主谓宾结构，其中give away 为动词词组作谓语.

\[关键句型] 本句 even if 表示“即使”，属于开放的让步条件；主句 will not accept、从句 gives 都未采用表示反事实的虚拟形式，不能仅凭 if 就判作虚拟语气。
