# 09 · 冷清迎新年

On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall. It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock. It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time. Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped. The big minute hand did not move. We waited and waited, but nothing happened. Suddenly someone shouted, 'It's two minutes past twelve! The clock has stopped!' I looked at my watch. It was true. The big clock refused to welcome the New Year. At that moment, everybody began to laugh and sing.

中文理解：星期三晚上，我们去了市政厅。那天是这一年的最后一天，一大群人聚集在市政厅的大钟下面。再过二十分钟，钟就该敲十二下了。 十五分钟过去了，可到了十一点五十五分，钟却停了。大分针一动不动。我们等了又等，还是什么也没发生。 突然，有人喊道：“已经十二点零二分了！钟停了！” 我看了看手表，果然如此。这座大钟竟然不肯迎接新年。 就在这时，大家都笑起来，唱起了歌。

* **a large crowd of**：一大群；crowd强调聚集的人群，of后说明哪些人。

* **in twenty minutes' time**：二十分钟后；表示多久以后；复数minutes后加所有格撇号。

* **at five to twelve**：在十一点五十五分；to表示差几分到下一点钟，不是十二点过五分。

* **waited and waited**：等了又等；重复动词强调持续和等候者的感受。

* **refused to**：拒绝做；偏偏不；人可拒绝，拟人时也可形容机器不肯运转。

* **At that moment**：就在那一刻；that指故事中的特定时刻，适合引出突发变化。

#### On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hall.

简单句，主谓结构. 大家一起去镇上的广场之类的地方倒数迎接新年，本课主要熟悉时间的表达，在这一课的背后，需要完整地学习时间表达方式才行，不能仅依靠本篇课文.

#### It was the last day of the year and a large crowd of people had gathered under the Town Hall clock.

并列句，and 连接前后两句，前句为主系表结构；后句为主谓结构.

#### It would strike twelve in twenty minutes' time.

简单句，主谓宾结构. 大钟会敲击报时，12点钟会响12下，《新概念英语3》第2课叫“thirteen equals one”，讲到了这个点.

#### Fifteen minutes passed and then, at five to twelve, the clock stopped.

并列句，本句是and 连接前后两句，不是第二个逗号，注意留意，一般来说，单独的逗号无法连接前后两个句子. 本句前后两句均为主谓结构.

#### We waited and waited, but nothing happened.

并列句，but 连接 We waited and waited 与 nothing happened，两边都是主谓结构；前面的 and 重复连接 waited，强调一直等待。

#### I looked at my watch.

简单句，主谓宾结构.

\[关键句型] 本课学习带介词的短语，这里look at 的at 便是介词，教材中还介绍了 in 和on 的一些短语，需要回到教材上予以学习.

#### The big clock refused to welcome the New Year.

简单句，主谓宾结构，拟人化的描写，也是本课标题之意，大钟没有欢迎新年的到来，to welcome the New Year 为动词不定式短语作宾语.

#### At that moment, everybody began to laugh and sing.

简单句，主谓宾结构，同样是动词不定式作宾语.
