People hold differing opinions on whether modern society fosters greater dependence on one another or increased independence. In my view, while some aspects of contemporary life encourage interdependence, modern developments have ultimately made people more self-reliant than in the past.

On one hand, it is undeniable that certain aspects of modern life necessitate greater reliance on others. One key factor is the increasing complexity of life, particularly in financial matters. The soaring cost of living, especially in urban areas, often compels young adults to seek financial assistance from their families. For instance, rising property prices make it difficult for first-time buyers to afford a home without parental support for the initial deposit. Additionally, the pursuit of a higher standard of living means that both parents in many households work full-time, making them reliant on external childcare, such as grandparents or professional babysitters. These realities suggest that modern society reinforces dependence in some ways.

However, I support the view that people today are more independent than ever before. One reason for this is the shift in family dynamics. In many countries, families have become smaller and more geographically dispersed, reducing the extent to which individuals can rely on relatives for support. Furthermore, globalization and technological advancements have enabled people to move away from their hometowns in pursuit of education and career opportunities. For example, an increasing number of students choose to study abroad rather than attend a local university, an experience that fosters self-sufficiency as they learn to manage daily life independently. Another crucial factor is the impact of technology, which has revolutionized how people work and communicate. Remote work and digital tools now allow individuals to work independently from anywhere in the world, further reinforcing self-reliance.

In conclusion, while modern life has created some forms of dependence, particularly in financial and childcare aspects, the overall trend points toward greater independence. Smaller family structures, global mobility, and technological advancements have empowered individuals to navigate life with less reliance on others.
