> Not only was a **monopoly** of cinnamon becoming impossible, but the spice trade overall was diminishing in economic potential, and was eventually superseded by the rise of trade in coffee, tea, chocolate, and sugar.

**重点词块：** **monopoly**、**diminish**、**be superseded by**

:::

| **be superseded by** | 被……取代 | be replaced by |

* **倒装前项：** `Not only was a monopoly of cinnamon becoming impossible` Not only 置于句首，be 动词 was 移到主语 a monopoly 前；正常语序是 a monopoly was becoming impossible。
* **递进后项：** `but the spice trade overall was diminishing in economic potential` but 后恢复主语在前、谓语在后的语序；谈的是整个香料贸易。
* **最终结果：** `and was eventually superseded by the rise of trade in coffee, tea, chocolate, and sugar` was superseded 是被动，承接 spice trade；by 后列出取代它的新商品贸易。

`Not only` 句首倒装给递进铺垫，`but` 后回常序，`and` 续上最终变化。

强调两项并存的影响，用 `Not only` + 助动词/`be` + 主语 ..., `but` + 主语 ...。口语也可用 `It not only` ...

> `Not only 〔前项倒装〕, but 〔后项常序〕, and 〔最终变化〕.`

> Not only did the new route shorten the journey, but it also made the hospital easier to reach, and more residents began using the bus.

仿写第 1 句 `Not only did the new route shorten` ... `but it also made` 恢复常序；最后 `more residents` ...

> Not only did the workshop explain the software, but it also gave staff time to practise, and confidence improved.

> Not only was a **monopoly** of cinnamon becoming impossible, / but the spice trade overall was diminishing in economic potential, / and was eventually superseded by the rise of trade in coffee, / tea, / chocolate, / and sugar.

**可复用骨架：** `Not only 〔前项倒装〕, but 〔后项常序〕, and 〔最终变化〕.`

> Not only was the old system becoming too expensive, but it was also slowing down deliveries and was eventually replaced by a simpler design.
